Although most dog food is made from human food, the way it is processed and cooked allows the dog's digestive system to properly digest those foods. Not all human food is easily digested by dogs, many foods contain toxins and other ingredients that can cause gastrointestinal problems, along with other digestive upsets, and allergies.

These foods are meant to be treats for your dogs and not as a supplement for dog food. As long as these portions are limited and are not fatty or heavily seasoned, they can have great health benefits for dogs. With adding anything to your pet's diet, it's always a good idea to watch the behavior of your pet to make sure they do not have any digestive problems, or allergic reactions to new foods.

Traditional dog treats from the store where making my puppy gassy, and being able to substitute these healthy treats for my puppy is great. She gets great health benefits for her teeth, and additional fiber from her treats and no gas.

  • Lean Meats: Most dogs are fine eating lean cuts that have been thoroughly cooked and the bones and fat removed. However some dogs will have a greater desire to chase and hunt those animals, especially if they are already a hunting breed or have hunted before.
  • Fresh Fruits: Slices of apples, bananas, and watermelon make tasty treats for your dog. Remember to remove and seeds, stems, leaves, and rinds as they can cause serious problems. Pumpkin is a great source of fiber, however many dogs may have severe allergic reactions to this fruit. It's always important to remember that with anything new to watch your pet for any changes or reactions.
  • Vegetables: Carrot sticks, green beans, cucumber and zucchini slices. Carrots are great for your dogs teeth. They keep the teeth white, clean. Brushing my puppies teeth proves to be a hard task, giving her carrots really helps. Green beans are a great source of fiber and help dogs lose weight by boosting their metabolism.
  • Grains: Cooked white rice and pasta have shown to improve some gastrointestinal upsets in dogs. Bread, oatmeal, and unsalted pretzels can also be used as treats. Oatmeal is great for older dogs who may have problems with bowel regularity.
  • Dairy: Many dogs may be lactose intolerant as dogs digestive systems are not easily capable of digesting lactose as they do not contain an enzyme called lactase which helps in the digestion of lactose. However if your dog is able to consume dairy in small quantities plain ice cream and yogurt, as well as cheese can be a good snack for your dog.
  • Peanut butter is a great treat for dogs. My puppy loves peanut butter and oddly it has a calming effect on her. I give her peanut butter before taking her to get her nails cut. It makes the whole process easier. Although like humans, some dogs may have allergic reactions to peanut butter in the form of itching, hair loss, or ear infections.

With adding any new foods to your dog's diet it is important to watch for any reactions that might occur. Every dog is different, and what might be okay for your pet might not be okay for others. My fiance's dog eats vanilla ice cream, however all the dogs that I've had were all lactose intolerant and could not have any form of dairy.

When giving treats to your dog it's a good idea to never feed more than five to ten percent of your pet's diet with these treats. A balanced and nutrient rich diet filled with vet recommended quality dog food along with these healthy treats will ensure an active and healthy life for your pet.

One of our dogs love carrots, the other doesn't care for them. Dogs are picky just like their human counterparts. Great ideas! Voted up.

Thanks for the vote homesteadpatch! Yes they are. My fiance's dog doesn't like carrots either, however my puppy just loves them. Good thing too, because brushing her teeth is such a pain.
